Denise Grobbelaar

Denise Grobbelaar is a Jungian Analyst, Clinical Psychologist, and Psychotherapist based in Cape Town, South Africa. With over a decade of experience in private practice since 2011, she offers a depth-oriented therapeutic approach rooted in Analytical Psychology. She is a registered training analyst and supervisor with the C.G. Jung Institute of Zurich, and a member of both the South African Association of Jungian Analysts (SAAJA) and the International Association for Analytical Psychology (IAAP).
Denise's therapeutic approach is guided by a strong commitment to the inner work of individuation—supporting clients as they explore personal mythologies and their archetypal underpinnings to connect with their authentic selves. She integrates diverse modalities, including dreams, active imagination, shadow work, the Enneagram, psychedelic integration, and breathwork, to support clients in uncovering and integrating unconscious patterns and complexes. Her work is informed by a profound respect for the unconscious, Nature, and indigenous wisdom traditions, reflecting her belief in the interconnectedness of psyche and environment.
Denise works deeply with the mythic structure of the hero and heroine’s journey as a powerful metaphor for the process of individuation. She views this journey not as a linear path, but as a cyclical and transformative movement through thresholds, trials, and returns—echoing the soul’s call toward wholeness through multiple initiations. Central to her approach is an appreciation for the psyche’s multiplicity—honoring the many inner voices, archetypal figures, and fragmented parts that arise in the healing process. Through careful and compassionate engagement with these inner figures, Denise helps clients navigate the tensions between opposites, fostering integration and a more authentic relationship with the Self.
She is also a contributor to the field through teaching, public talks, and writing. Her published paper, “The White Lion as Symbol of the Archetype of the Self and the Cannibalization of the Self in Canned Hunting,” appeared in the 2020 Spring issue of the Jung Journal: Culture & Psyche, and was later reprinted in the 2023 volume The Spectre of the Other in Jungian Psychoanalysis: Political, Psychological, and Sociological Perspectives.
